Erik Lehnsherr arrives in New York (USA), having tired of Europe, traveling to Brooklyn to pick up his new costume. He ruminates about the current state of Mutant social relations with humans, which at the time is tolerable, and even expected as super-heroes are predominate. While he picks up his costume and swoons the designer Cassandra, a creature grows underground, what Magnus (Lehnsherr) calls an 'abomination'. He is soon confronted by the monster, and the spur to change identity.
